The Finney County Sheriff's Office - Patrol
Division
The patrol division consists
of 3 sergeants, 3 corporals and 12 deputies who are under the administration
of Captain Mike Warren.
Two of the deputies assigned to patrol are also assigned to the
K-9 Unit.
The Patrol is responsible for
preventing crime and maintaining peace throughout the county. As a part of routine patrol,
the deputies check suspicious incidents and persons, enforce state laws and county
resolutions, make arrests, check businesses and residences for security, conduct criminal
investigations, work with juveniles, investigate farm, industrial and traffic accidents,
check clubs and taverns, and handle many other situations as they occur. The deputies must
be knowledgeable of the citizens needs and be prepared to assist at any time.
Due to the area
in which we are located, deputies are extensively involved in monitoring
severe weather formation and activity. Training is provided by Finney
County Emergency Management and National Weather Service Office
in Dodge City, KS. Being called to duty as a storm spotter is quite
common during the summer months.
The K-9 Unit is a specialized unit
within the patrol division consisting of two officers and two specially trained German
Shepards. The K-9's are used for narcotic detection, crowd control, searches for
lost/missing persons, building searches for concealed persons and tracking of fleeing
individuals. A handler must possess a multitude of qualifications and undergo initial as
well as extensive recurrent training. The use of dogs in law enforcement is rapidly
expanding and some very interesting links are provided below.
The Finney County
Sheriff's Posse is also attached to the Patrol Division with the
patrol lieutenant serving as Liaison to the group. The Posse is
made up of volunteers from the community who wish to serve their
fellow citizens. These volunteers may be maintaining other full-time
employment or even be retired.
Posse applicants undergo a similar
employment process to full-time department employees. Once accepted they must then
successfully complete nearly 150 hours of classroom instruction, and 40 hours of ride
along with a patrol deputy. They then undergo at least 100 additional hours of intensive
ride along training before they are granted the privilege of gaining work assignments.
The Posse assists
the Sheriff's Office anytime and anywhere as needed. The Posse is
assigned patrol duties, assists in the jail, transports prisoners,
aids investigators at crime scenes and conducts a variety of security
assignments. Generally the only pay a posse member receives is from
prisoner transports There have been occasions when a member was
paid to conduct patrol duties when the patrol division was extremely
short handed.
The Posse has
been an invaluable asset to the Sheriff's Office since its beginning
in 1972. As of September, 2002 it is comprised of a captain, lieutenant,
sergeant, corporal and 17 deputies; it has a total capacity of 25
members. The captain has been with the posse since 1974 and has
logged over 6,000 hours of service. An office deputy with the Sheriff's
Office acts as the Posse secretary and the departments comptroller
manages the finances.
A Posse recruit
class is normally conducted every other year, The last class
completed in June, 2001. If you have an interest in this group,
please contact the Sheriff's Office at 272-3700 or send email
here.
