Office of The County Attorney
The County Attorney is the chief law
enforcement officer in Finney County. The office handles felony crimes, select misdemeanor
and traffic prosecutions. These cases include murder, rape, robbery, gang-related crimes,
juvenile offenses, care and treatment actions, child in need of care, criminal appeals,
select traffic offenses, and many others.
John P. Wheeler, Jr. is the
County Attorney, being elected to a third four year term in 2000.
The staff consists of six additional attorneys, a support staff
of eleven office personnel, along with the Victim/Witness coordinator, Marissa Ruiz.
The County Attorney's office
receives and evaluates a wide array of criminal cases from numerous law enforcement
agencies including but not limited to the following:
- Finney County Sheriff's Office (FISO).
- Garden City Police Department.
(GCPD).
- Holcomb Police Department (HPD).
- Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP).
- Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI).
- Department of Social &
Rehabilitation Services (SRS).
- Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
- Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco &
Firearms (ATF).
- Immigration and Naturalization
Service (INS).
A major emphasis in our office is
complying with the provisions of the Kansas Victims Bill of Rights. Our duties include
prompt notification of all adult public hearings, providing assistance to victims of
crime, locating additional resources to assist victims and their families, arranging for
witness appearances and providing support throughout the criminal process. The system is
similar in juvenile proceedings.
